Cleanliness is Critical: Perform the disassembly and assembly in an immaculately clean, dust-free environment. Even the smallest particle can compromise the seal.
Careful Disassembly: Before disassembly, thoroughly clean the external surfaces of the cylinder. Mark components for easy reassembly. Use appropriate tools to avoid scratching or damaging sealing surfaces and threads.
Inspect All Components: Carefully inspect the piston, rod, cylinder bore, and gland for any signs of scoring, pitting, or wear. Any damaged metal components must be repaired or replaced before installing new seals.
Handle Seals with Care: New seals are delicate. Lubricate all seals with clean hydraulic oil or the recommended fluid before installation. Avoid using sharp tools; use seal picks or installation cones to guide seals into place without nicking or cutting them.
Mind the Direction: Pay close attention to the orientation of lip seals (e.g., primary and secondary seals). The lip typically faces the fluid pressure side. Incorrect installation will cause immediate leakage.
Avoid Over-stretching: When installing seals over threads or sharp edges, use a protective sleeve or tape to cover them. This prevents cutting or damaging the seal lip.
Torque Specifications: During reassembly, tighten all bolts and nuts evenly and to the manufacturer's specified torque values using a calibrated torque wrench.
